Motivating Inner New DreamS (MINDS) began as a vision scribbled in a notebook in 2014. For founder James “Screal” Eberheart Jr., it was more than an idea; it was a calling to create a space where young people could discover their power, reclaim their narratives, and lead with purpose.
From the start, MINDS has embraced the power of technology as a tool for transformation. Whether through digital media, esports, or entrepreneurship, Screal saw tech not as a barrier, but as a bridge.
Today, that vision is alive and thriving in Wayne County, where MINDS blends community healing, innovation, and tech-forward programming to serve Black and Brown youth. “I always believed this was bigger than me,” Screal shares. “There are dreams inside of your mind that want to come out. MINDS is here to help people bring those dreams to life.”
Leveling Up Through Esports
MINDS’ latest program, Game On: Player One Warriors, transforms gaming from a pastime into a launchpad. Housed at Takers Gaming Lounge in Livonia’s Laurel Park Mall, this state-of-the-art esports training space is where Detroit students ages 12–16 are gaining real-world skills through play.
Courses at the lounge go far beyond gameplay. Students are introduced to digital wellness, cyberbullying prevention, health and nutrition, teamwork, and strategic thinking. They also explore career pathways within the growing esports and tech industries, including broadcasting, game design, and production.
For many youth, this program serves as their first real exposure to tech, and the possibilities it can unlock. Screal believes this early introduction is critical: “If we meet young people where they are, we can help them level up in life. This isn’t just about esports. It’s about leadership, wellness, and community.”
The program ends with a student-led tournament, but the real win is the confidence, collaboration, and career exposure students take with them. As part of the curriculum, participants are also encouraged to think like entrepreneurs, developing business ideas tied to gaming or tech and practicing how to pitch them.

Championing Collaboration Over Competition
MINDS operates with a guiding philosophy: collaboration over competition. The organization’s Community Volunteer Leadership Council supports residents who want to step into leadership roles and give back through mentorship, event planning, and civic engagement.
“Not everyone is ready to lead, but we believe leadership is in everyone,” Screal says. “Our volunteers are learning new skills, building confidence, and reprogramming what they’re comfortable with.”
The Council helps ensure that the work of MINDS stays community-rooted and community-led, driven by those who live in, love, and lead in Wayne County.
A Vision Supported by Song Foundation
Screal submitted an application to the foundation team through the online portal in September 2024 and was approved for a grant in November 2024 after meeting with staff and sharing the vision for Game On.
Screal says the grant from Song Foundation has been transformational: “This dream exists because of their investment. And I know it will grow.”
The Future of MINDS
Screal’s goal is for MINDS to become a “motherboard for transformation.”
MINDS is just getting started. From volunteer opportunities to upcoming events and workshops, there are many ways to plug in and power up.
