The Detroit Change Initiative (DCI) works tirelessly to bridge gaps and create pathways for meaningful change. DCI is a coalition of dedicated community leaders, therapists, and social workers committed to transforming Detroit’s landscape.

“We work with neighborhood organizations big and small to help them see the changes they want to see in the communities,” shared Norman Clement, Founder of DCI.

 Why Their Work Matters

Detroit is a city rich in history, culture, and resilience, yet it has faced decades of economic hardship and social inequality. DCI’s work is vital to empower Detroit residents and address the root causes of inequality. DCI provides resources and opportunities for individuals and families to equip them with the tools to achieve stability and growth.

“We develop a relationship through active listening,” shared Clement. We try to be a part of their events to gain trust and partnerships and bridge the gap.”

Key Programs and Impact

Through its programs, community engagement, and partnerships, DCI addresses various social issues, including housing insecurity, access to quality education, economic empowerment, and criminal justice reform. DCI works with local businesses, nonprofits, and government entities to amplify its impact and create a unified front against the city’s most pressing challenges.

Through after-school programs, mentorship opportunities, and scholarship initiatives, DCI supports young people in their academic and personal development. By investing in youth, DCI is building future leaders who will continue the mission of justice and equity. Their work is essential in creating safer, more inclusive neighborhoods where everyone can thrive.

“We have partnerships that allow us to teach civic education and literacy to our youth. Last year, we took on the process of recruiting over 1,700 youth to work at the clerk’s office to give them experience to educate them on various aspects of civic engagement.”

New Initiative: We Are ID’D

One of DCI’s latest initiatives, We Are ID’D, directly addresses a critical yet often overlooked barrier—access to identification documents. Without a government-issued ID, birth certificate, or Social Security card, thousands of students are unable to access essential opportunities, including education, employment, housing, and healthcare.

Through a partnership with Journey Faith Group (JFG) and DCI, We Are ID’D removes this barrier by covering ID application fees, birth certificates, Social Security cards, assisting with documentation, and facilitating transportation to processing locations.

The initiative aims to provide 25,000 students across Michigan with the identification documents they need to unlock life-changing opportunities.

To achieve this goal, Detroit Change Initiative is actively seeking sponsorships, mini-grants, and donations from businesses, organizations, and community partners. Every contribution helps remove barriers and opens doors for students striving for a brighter future.

Looking Toward the Future

Through their work, DCI is redefining what’s possible in Detroit and setting a powerful example for cities across the nation.
